In may 2015, an animated spin-off aimed at children premiered on Netflix.
Ricky Chadwick, Emma Gilbert and Cleo Sertori are three Australian girls who happen to be on the mysterious island of Mako. They bathe in a lake under an extinct volcano when the full moon passes over them, washing its pool with its light. Returning to normal life, the girls soon learn that ten seconds after contact with water, they turn into mermaids. In further experiments, the girls also discover that they have water-related supernatural abilities.
The trio tries to keep their secret, with the support of Cleo's friend Lewis McCartney. They soon adapt to their new abilities and lifestyle.
The second season features Charlotte Watsford, Cleo's rival, who is Dating Lewis after his breakup with Cleo. She also gains the ability to transform into a mermaid and becomes the main antagonist of the season. Charlotte has the powers of all three mermaids. In the end, Charlotte loses both her powers and Lewis.
The third season begins with the departure of Emma, who leaves to travel the world with her parents. A new character, Bella Hartley, appears and it is revealed that she has been a mermaid since the age of nine. Ricky and Cleo start a friendship with Bella, but soon they begin to be frightened by a mysterious tentacle appearing in the water, connected to Mako island.
Will Benjamin also becomes friends with the trio and soon discovers that they are mermaids. The girls learn that Earth is in the path of a comet that could destroy the planet. Using their powers, they prevent the comet from colliding with Earth.
Phenomena in artwork: Mermaid
The main characters of the series Emma, Ricky and Cleo become mermaids, having bathed in the full moon in a mysterious pond in the mouth of an extinct volcano on Mako island. Since then, 10 seconds after touching the water, the girls turn into mermaids. In addition, each of the girls gets a superpower associated with water (one can heat the water, the second can freeze it, and the third can control its flow).
During the full moon, the girls are forced to hide, because when they see the full moon (or even its reflection), they lose control and become sirens, causing suffering to others.
Among the characters in the series, there are other mermaids, and some of them have all the abilities of girls at the same time.
Phenomena in artwork: Anomalous zone
An anomalous zone can be considered a grotto on Mako island with a natural reservoir in the center. The light of the full moon falls on the water, and it begins to boil. If at this moment a person is in the reservoir, then he acquires supernatural abilities.

Phenomena in artwork: Paranormal abilities
Each of the girls who turn into a mermaid gets a superpower:
- one is the ability to heat water, even bringing it to a boil; its powers increase over time, allowing it to control fire and lightning;
- the second is to freeze water, and eventually control clouds, ice, and snow;
- the third is able to control the shape of water and its flow; later it gets the ability to control the wind.
In the series, there are characters who have all the listed abilities at the same time.
During the full moon, the heroines are forced to hide, because when they see the full moon (or even its reflection), they lose control and become sirens, causing suffering to others (for example, depriving them of their will by singing).
