In 2002, I, a young employee of the historical museum of the district scale, was sent on a business trip to Valdai in order to study local customs related exclusively to wedding ceremonies, which were conducted not according to protocol, namely in terms of folk customs. I settled in a fairly large village, I was happy with my housing, if not for one circumstance.
I had to melt the oven myself in the morning, which I couldn't get used to. It is necessary to get up two hours before the proposed trip to the surrounding villages, to heat the stove so that the house would be warm by my return. But I coped with this, I even liked it…
About four days later, I'm going home on a bicycle in the evening and I see that a huge column of either fire or some strange light is rising into the sky above my temporary home. It got cold inside, I decided that the fire had done something wrong with the stove.
I drive up to the house — everything is in order, there are no signs of even the slightest fire, there is not even a smell of smoke in the house. Warm, cozy. And suddenly I notice that the firewood in the stove, which should have been extinguished long ago and turned into coals, is blazing with fire. But I didn't leave the key to anyone, they told me right away that I only had the key, there was no second one.
I had nightmares all night, it was very hot in the house, and I even opened the windows. I woke up from an incredible cold, as if the stove in the house had never been heated at all. Flooded, filled the whole stove with firewood, waited until everything burned out, closed the flap. Left.
In the evening I see the same thing: the pillar of light is just above my house. And again the firewood blazing in the stove… I could believe that someone had a key and someone was heating the stove. But I clearly saw this column of bright light going into the sky. I couldn't explain it in any way, and then I just asked for a simpler house, and I realized from the smirk of the chairman of the Village Council that something was wrong there…
