Initial data
Natalia V. Tretyakova, Head of the Department of Thermal Engineering Measurements at the Karelian Laboratory of State Supervision of Standards and Measuring Equipment, writes to the Commission on:
Description of the event I observed in the sky on October 17, 1978 in Petrozavodsk.
On October 17, at about 18 o'clock, I was walking along Antonov Street towards Lake Onega. My attention was attracted by a glowing object on the horizon above the opposite shore of the lake. The object was a glowing ball of red-orange color with a diameter of about 1/4 the diameter of the disk of the Moon, which rose at the same place on the horizon later. At the beginning of the observation, I did not observe any noticeable movements of the object for 1.5-2 minutes. then the object began to move to the right and up along a somewhat curved trajectory (for about 3 minutes) and stopped at a point 45 degrees horizontally and 45 degrees vertically from the original one.
The red-orange color of the object remained for 1-2 path lengths, then the color changed to a shining white. for about 1 \ 3 of the trajectory, a white plume appeared behind the object, the width of the diameter of the object. Some time after the object stopped, 4 beams appeared, resembling the rays of a searchlight, emanating from the object at an angle of 90 degrees to each other. The beam length was approximately 4 diameters of the object. I observed the object with the rays for 2-3 minutes. then the object suddenly disappeared.
During the observation (from 17-57 to 18-05), the sky in the observation area of the object was cloudless and blue.
Hypotheses
Booster, the rocket and tracks
For UFOs often take stages of rockets, parts of space ships burning in the atmosphere, the launches of various missile technology for military purposes, etc., and traces from them. They attract attention mostly in the dark, but in the day time have a greater aura of mystery.
Formation of the track of the launch vehicle occurs in the tropopause (the layer between the troposphere and stratosphere), which sharply reduced the vertical temperature gradient. The emergence of the so-called "jellyfish" influenced by water vapor, which are subject to enhanced condensation.
