In the summer of 1976 or 1977, a young girl swimming in a pond in Ruili County, Yunnan Province, was allegedly attacked by Xiji, who wrapped himself so tightly around her arm that her father had to cut off her hand.
A few weeks later, a "floating shadow" grabbed a man swimming in the same pool, prompting locals to drain him. Presumably, they subsequently found the man's body, "still tightly wrapped in moss-covered suckers."
