Initial data
The figure [above] and the following report relate to a case being investigated and submitted by Grupo Espanol de Investigacion del Fenomeno Ovni (GEIFO) in Cadiz, Spain. We are grateful to GEIFO Secretary Inmaculato Rodriguez for this excellent report and to APRO staff artist Shane Johnson for his visualization (based on the original GEIFO drawing). English dimensions and translations from Spanish by Ms. Lorenzen.
The following details describe a very unique case without any embellishment:
On March 25, 1981, at 19:00 (local time), the fishing vessel Moguer 5 left the port of Ayamonte (Huelva) in Spain and put to sea. Six other boats made up the rest of the small fishing fleet. Moguer 5 was 400 meters from the shore when a conical object was seen hovering above the surface of the water 100 meters further from the sea.
The object was first spotted by Eugenio Burgo Gomez, who attracted the attention of his crewmates and then the crews of six other boats. The description of the surrounding area is as follows:
The Ayamonte area has a permanent population of about 8,000, and the local industry includes fishing and sea salt mining. In summer, the city's population increases to about 100,000 due to a thriving tourist business.
There are rivers in the surrounding area Guadiana , Odiel , Tinto, Piedras, Lagunas del Portil, Lagunas de Los Barreros, prima de Palos and Laguna de Las Madres. It is popularly called the "swamp zone". The Donana Park biological reserve is also located in this area. Nearby are the army bases of Rota and Cadiz, La Parra air base, and usually there are many planes, including helicopters, and warships. However, at the time of discovery, the witnesses did not see anyone.
The physical and weather conditions were as follows:
On the shore where the observation took place is the El Rompido campground , which was mostly empty as it was "off-season". The sea depth was 5 meters (14 feet), the weather was good, with no clouds and good visibility. The Moguer 5 is equipped with a 130-horsepower engine, echo sounder, magnetic compass and radio, none of which showed any signs of being affected by the presence of an object. The bearing of the vessel - 000, the speed - 05 min. There was a slight commotion at sea.
The conical gray object was about 1 meter (3 feet 3 inches) above the sea surface and was rotating clockwise around itself. There were two rows of yellowish lights, one near the top of the cone and the other at the bottom. The water depth at the hovering point is 5 meters (about 16 feet) according to navigation maps.
The object did not make a sound, did not emit any steam or traces, but it seems to have caused a wave of water directly below it. According to witnesses, the diameter at the base was 50 meters (approximately 140 feet), and the height was about 60 meters (170 feet).
Witnesses observed the cone for 20 minutes while it was rotating (there is no data on the speed of rotation) above the surface of the sea for 20 minutes, during which time it rose vertically and disappeared into the sky.

FISHING CREWS OBSERVE OBJECT
The drawing [above] and the following report concern a case investigated and submitted by the Grupo Espanol de Investigacion del Fenomeno Ovni (GEIFO) of Cadiz, Spain. We are indebted to GEIFO’s Secretary, Inmaculato Rodriguez for this excellent report and APRO staff artist Shane Johnson for his rendering (based on the original GEIFO drawing). English dimensions and translations from the Spanish by Mrs. Lorenzen.
Without any embellishment, the following details describe a very unique case:
On March 25, 1981, at 7 p.m. (local time) the fishing boat Moguer 5 left port at Ayamonte (Huelva) Spain and proceeded out to sea. Six other boats comprised the rest of a small fishing fleet. The Moguer 5 was 400 meters from the shore when a conical-shaped object was seen 100 meters farther out to sea, hovering over the water’s surface (see drawing).
The object was first spotted by Eugenio Burgo Gomez, who called the attention of his crew-mates and thereafter, the crews of the other six boats. The description of the surrounding area follows:
THE SIGHTING AREA
The Ayamonte area has a permanent population of about 8,000 people and the local industry includes fishing and sea salt mining. The population swells to about 100,000 in the summer due to a flourishing tourism business.
In the surrounding area are the Guadiana, Odiel, Tinto, Piedras, Lagunas del Portil, Lagunas de los Barreros, Prima de Palos and Laguna de las Madres rivers. It is popularly called the “zone of the swamps”. A biological reserve named Donana Park is located in the area also. Close by are the Rota and Cadiz Army Bases, the La Parra Air Base, and there is ordinarily considerable aircraft, including helicopters, and warship activity. However, at the time of the sighting there were none observed by the witnesses.
The physical and weather conditions were as follows:
On the shore off which the sighting took place is El Rompido camping ground, which was largely unoccupied as it was “off season”. The depth of the sea was 5 meters (14 feet), and weather was good with no clouds and good visibility. The Moguer 5 is equipped with a 130 horsepower engine, a sounder, magnetic- compass and radio, none of which showed any indication of being affected by the presence of the object. The vessel’s bearing was 000, it’s speed 05′. There was a slight sea swell.
SIGHTING DETAILS
The conical, gray object was situated approximately 1 meter (3 feet, 3 inches) above the surface of the sea and was revolving (see drawing) around itself in a clockwise direction. There were two rows of yellowish lights, one near the top of the cone, and the other near the bottom. The depth of the water at the point where the object hovered is 5 meters (about 16 feet) according to nautical charts.
The object made no sound, gave off no vapor or trail, but did appear to cause a disturbance of the water directly under it. It was estimated by the witnesses to be 50 meters (140 feet approximately) in diameter at its base, and about 60 meters (170 feet) high.
The witnesses watched the cone for 20 minutes while it rotated (no figures available concerning rate of rotation) just above the sea’s surface for 20 minutes at which time it rose vertically and disappeared into the sky.
