In the northern part of Wales there is the valley of Nant Gwynant-a picturesque place with green grasses and shrubs, where several waterfalls make a noise, and in a deep stone thicket there is a lake in which, according to ancient legends, the magic sword Excalibur, which belonged to King Arthur, rests. Next to one of the waterfalls is a cave, which is popularly called "the cave of the hairy man". Such a strange name is due to the fact that a couple of centuries ago or a little more there lived a wild man who appeared from nowhere, in fact a relict hominid.
This creature, according to the surviving descriptions, looked like a cross between a man and a monkey. It caused local farmers a lot of trouble, raiding their land, sheds with supplies and pens for sheep.
The Welsh Yeti not only stole sheep for his lunch, but also managed to milk cows and goats to drink milk. The peasants tried to catch the thief, built traps and ambushed him, but all this was useless. The elusiveness of the monster led people to believe that they were dealing with something supernatural, perhaps some incarnation of the spirit of the valley.
British explorer All Lewis reports that once a local shepherd returned from the mountains later than usual.
Suddenly, on a nearby hill, he noticed a huge humanoid male creature, quite tall and covered with red hair from head to toe. The shepherd thought that this creature was the same wild man who steals cattle, and ran to his native village. Gathering the inhabitants, he persuaded them to catch the thief and banish him from the area forever. The peasants, some with pitchforks, some with shovels, ran to the hill. The red-haired giant was still there, but when he saw the people, he got down on all fours and ran away.
A few days later, the savage returned to the village, causing chaos and fear. The peasants tried to set the dogs on him, but as soon as they sensed pursuit, the hominid ran away. At the same time, he developed an extraordinary speed, easily leaving behind the fastest hounds. Of course, he soon reappeared in the village.
After a while, a man who was considered a sorcerer came to those parts And said that he could help catch the monster if they brought him a red dog, without a single hair of a different color. The villagers searched for such a dog for a long time, but still found it and brought it to the sorcerer. Soon, this dog actually led the humans straight to the hominid, and it was trapped on the edge of a cliff. However, when the villagers began to approach the monster to kill or catch it, it jumped down from the cliff without any noticeable harm to itself.
The inhabitants of the valley cursed the creature, which seemed to care nothing, and it became more and more insolent. Even the local women were too impatient. One of them long resented the raids of the ape-like thief, and then decided to arrange an armed ambush on him. For what I took a huge axe and hid in the closet, where I kept food.
Several nights passed quietly, and then one day in the dark someone came to the window. A huge, hairy body began to squeeze through the window opening, and the woman, without waiting for the creature to be inside the room, jumped out of her hiding place and with all her strength hit him with an axe on the arm.
The blow was so strong that the Welsh Yeti's hairy arm was completely severed. The monster itself ran away, leaving a trail of blood in its wake. In the morning, the villagers shared with each other the happy news that the thief had managed to injure. Gathering in a large crowd, they followed the trail of blood that led them to the cave at the waterfall. They found no one inside, but since then the raids on the village have stopped. The monster did not appear again. Apparently, he bled to death. Since then, this cave has been called "the cave of the hairy man".
