Oreus. H. G. on the observation of an unusual phenomenon in Leningrad
I want to describe to you a phenomenon that my wife and I witnessed on 12.09.1985 at about 22 o'clock in Leningrad.
Returning home, we turned from the Fontanka River embankment towards Sadovaya Street to the Kryukov Canal embankment. After walking 25 meters towards Sadovaya Street, our attention was struck by what we saw.
The sky was cloudless, starry, there was no wind. In the northeastern part of the sky over Leningrad, at an angle of about 40 degrees to the horizon, a brightly glowing object hovered. The color of the glow resembled the light of a fluorescent lama with a faint blueness. The shape of the object was a rectangle with a rounded upper end. Its apparent dimensions were about a sixth of the diameter of the moon at the zenith. The object was perceived as a material body.
A strong stream of light was directed in the direction of the ground from the object, which we saw with a clear outline of the sector, apparently going below the roofs of the opposing houses, since the lower boundary of the sector was not visible. It could not be called a cone, since the sense of volume was weak, the sector glowed almost the same color as the object, only weaker. As the light dissipated and moved away from the source, the intensity of illumination weakened. In a wide part of the sector, a large dark green spot of non-material appearance was visible against the sky.
After a while, the object began to rise slowly, but noticeably to the eye, and shifted by about 3 of its diameter. At the same time, the bottom of the sector did not come out from behind the roofs. The green spot remained motionless. Then the source object of the glow instantly went out. The sector and the dark green spot remained visible for some time. then the sector slowly went out. Last, without changing the shape and size, the spot disappeared.
We observed all this for 3-4 minutes and when the phenomenon disappeared, the clock showed 22-05. The embankment of the canal was deserted at that time and it was not necessary to pay someone's attention to this phenomenon. When I got home, I sketched from memory what I had seen.

For UFOs often take stages of rockets, parts of space ships burning in the atmosphere, the launches of various missile technology for military purposes, etc., and traces from them. They attract attention mostly in the dark, but in the day time have a greater aura of mystery.
Formation of the track of the launch vehicle occurs in the tropopause (the layer between the troposphere and stratosphere), which sharply reduced the vertical temperature gradient. The emergence of the so-called "jellyfish" influenced by water vapor, which are subject to enhanced condensation.
