Initial data
V. Sotnikov's report on the observation of an unusual phenomenon in the Vologda region.
On board the ship "Sergey Orlov" I made a tourist flight "Along the great northern lakes". They passed Lake Onega, then along the Vyter River - locks and in the afternoon of September 12, 1985 stopped at the roadstead due to thick fog, being in the Vologda region. The fog lasted until 11 a.m. the next day.
At about 21-30 - 22-00, an unusual atmospheric phenomenon was announced on the ship's broadcast, inviting tourists to come on deck. I went upstairs. There was no wind, the stars were visible through the thick fog. Joining the audience, I saw a rather bright spot in the sky at an angle of about 25-30 degrees to the horizon. The feeling was as if the moon, which had gone behind the cloud, illuminated it from above, remaining invisible itself. However, there was no moon at that moment, and the luminous spot exceeded the lunar disk in size (its apparent diameter was 12 centimeters at arm's length). The shape of the spot resembled a descending parachute, or a cone of light directed upwards. The contours of the spot were very blurred and the stars could not be seen through it.
During the first 15 minutes from the moment of fixation, a turquoise halo was observed around the spot, like a narrow halo. Then he disappeared. There was also a slow change in the shape of the spot and the intensity of the glow. It was constantly fading, taking on a shapeless feed, although in general it remained round. The size of the spot was decreasing, but it was visible all the time. There was also a very slow shift of the spot from right to left. During the observation (45 minutes), the spot shifted by 4-5 of its diameter, without changing the height above the horizon.
there was no sense of distance, but apparently the phenomenon occurred at a very high altitude. I find it difficult to determine the exact azimuth, because it was dark and foggy, but practically the spot was observed in the northern part of the sky, to the right and just below the dipper of the Big Dipper.
At the beginning, the brightness of the glow, perhaps, somewhat exceeded the radiance of the cloud illuminated by the moon. When the spot almost completely faded, I stopped watching. There was complete silence during the apparition.
Besides me, there were many other eyewitnesses on the ship.
Hypotheses
Booster, the rocket and tracks
For UFOs often take stages of rockets, parts of space ships burning in the atmosphere, the launches of various missile technology for military purposes, etc., and traces from them. They attract attention mostly in the dark, but in the day time have a greater aura of mystery.
Formation of the track of the launch vehicle occurs in the tropopause (the layer between the troposphere and stratosphere), which sharply reduced the vertical temperature gradient. The emergence of the so-called "jellyfish" influenced by water vapor, which are subject to enhanced condensation.
