M.V. Afanasyev's report on the observation of an unusual phenomenon in Petrodvorets (Leningrad).

On September 12, 1985, we saw a strange phenomenon about cadet Ulyanov V.: At 10 o'clock in the evening, when it was already dark, a very bright glow appeared in the sky above the neighboring building, as if a searchlight emitting a milky white bright light was installed above the building at a height of 150-200 m. At that time we were on the street. The weather was windless, calm and cloudless.

The glow was a truncated cone, ending in the air and diverging at an angle of 75-80 degrees to the horizon, the slice at the top of the cone was slightly smaller than the moon in angular dimensions. The source of the glow itself was not visible. The system was perceived volumetrically, i.e. as a cone with clear contours. The brightness of the glow was the same in height.

The glow was observed in the northern part of the sky at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizon. As for the distance, it felt different for everyone: from 150 to 500 m. By the way, there are no towers, high-rise buildings, cranes, etc. above and around the building. 

The glow lasted about 15-20 minutes, after which it gradually faded away, as if receding. many people have seen this phenomenon.

We did not experience any unpleasant effects. The planes were not flying at the moment.
