This incident happened a few years ago when I worked as the chief conductor of freight trains in the Leningrad-Vitebsk branch of the Oktyabrskaya Railway.
In one of the night shifts, Valery Sobolev, the driver of the export locomotive (who lived at that time in the village of Gorbunki, Lomonosov district) and I made a flight with an empty train to the Kalishche station (Sosnovy Bor). After passing the Bolshaya Izhora station, we received warnings from the duty officer: to Kalishche - "green street", speed 60 km / h, there are no oncoming trains, the route is completely ours.
We drove, as usual, talked, I personally began to feel sleepy, sometimes I opened the window of the locomotive cab to refresh myself with the oncoming flow of cold wind, but I wanted to sleep - the time was the most difficult, "the turning point of the shift."
And suddenly the drowsiness disappeared: sitting on the left in the direction of movement, I looked at the right side, where the driver was sitting: his silhouette stood out clearly against the background of some unusual, bright glow.
- Valera, look, - I jumped up to him in one jump, - look quickly!
- Wow! What's it?
But I could have asked him the same question myself. And something really unusual was happening: light was coming from the forest, from the side of the bay, from a small cape. The beam was located parallel (or parallel) to the earth's surface. It was bright, but it did not dazzle the eye, its color was ultramarine, such light occurs at night when electric welding works are carried out, but it was a beam, smooth, very bright, but not irritating to the eye. the beam, as it seemed, did not dissipate at all: it evenly illuminated the lower part of the tree trunks, their upper part merged with the dark starry, but cloudless sky: the middle of the trunks was as if dissected by the boundary of a very bright section of the beam and a perfect dark night.
At some moment, either we crossed the distribution boundary, or the beam "itself" illuminated our locomotive: everything in the cabin lit up with a bluish-green light, not for long. we did not experience any unpleasant sensations.
Valery began to call nearby stations by radio (Bolshaya Izhora, Lebyazhye, Krasnoflotsk, Kalishche), but no one answered us. This is due to the appearance of the beam or simply there was not enough power of the radio station, I do not undertake to judge. In addition, the person on duty may leave or disconnect from the connection for some reason.
The beam, meanwhile, like a giant fan, changed the horizontal plane to a vertical one and really spread out like a fan: the sections were separated from each other by clear boundaries, each of them differed from the other in the degree of brightness and color saturation (at the top) to the palest (at the bottom). several times the "fan" folded and opened again. we did not hear any sounds (possibly due to the operation of the locomotive engine).
All this lasted 10-15 minutes and disappeared as instantly as it appeared.
We got in touch only at the 80th km. None of the station employees Kalishche didn't see anything, although almost everyone was working on the street.
the attendant heard us only on the approach to the station, although the driver called everyone, all this time, with very short breaks.
I served in the army in the air defense forces, but I have never seen anything like this before (and after). Both the driver and I undergo a medical examination every year. Alcohol consumption was excluded: auditors from the department of the road could check on the night shift, and the time was "Gorbachev's": with all the desire, it was almost impossible to find "firewater" day and night. Besides, both of us allowed ourselves this very rarely...
