Message Ushakov Yu.A. about the observation of an unusual phenomenon in the vicinity of Leningrad

A group of VNIIELEKTROMASH employees participated in a night run from the village of Kernovo to Peterhof along the Gostilitsky highway on the night of May 14-15, 19981.

At about 1 a.m. on May 15, our group was at a rest stop 3 kilometers from the village of Lopukhinka. At 1 hour 25 minutes I went out towards the village, the comrades were supposed to come out 5 minutes after me.

About 20 minutes later, approaching the village from the left side, I saw a bright light bulb above the forest, and there was something like a glow behind the trees. The light bulb was as if in a fog.

I decided that the lighting lamp at the top of the tower crane on the construction site, in the fog - from the stoker.

After 5 minutes, when I got closer, I decided that this lamp was higher than a crane lamp could be, but most likely a radio mast with a light bulb at the top. I began to look closely to distinguish the mast and at that moment the fog grouped to distinguish the mast and at that moment the fog grouped and turned into jets, similar to a watermill with blades consisting of fog. These jets were clearly visible and slightly curved, as if during rotation. I stopped and looked.

Then the jets mixed, forming a misty cloud around the "light bulb" again. I watched it for 3-4 minutes. The fog began to disperse and a foggy ring formed around the "light bulb, a foggy space formed inside it, in the middle of which the "light bulb" remained. The fog parted and the expanding ring began to resemble the northern lights. The "light bulb" continued to hang inside the ring and a short misty tail was moving away from it.

When I heard the voices of my comrades, I shouted for them to go faster. At the same time, I noticed that the "light bulb" was shifting relative to the tops of the trees, as if going down. The speed of her movement increased and after 2-3 minutes she disappeared behind the tops of the trees. Its color was yellowish, like an ordinary light bulb. The height of the object of observation is approximately 30 degrees above the horizon. The dimensions are comparable to the lamp of a tower crane observed from earth, i.e. smaller than the moon at the zenith by 5-8 times. The trajectory of movement is approximately to the north, from the observer. The total observation time is 1 hour 45 - 2 hours, i.e. about 10-15 minutes. The trail (fog) was observed after the event for another half an hour. Weather conditions: dark night, no moon, stars are visible, but the glow is much brighter than the stars, there were no clouds overhead, and in the north clouds hung low over the horizon, illuminated by a glow."
