From a letter to the Commission on:
I am Private Zhukov F.E., since March 1979, guarding the facility, I was on duty.
At about 22-30, I noticed a strong flash and a fireball that moved silently from east to west at a distance of about 600-700 m from the protected object, at an altitude of 1-1.5 meters. The weather was calm, the air temperature was 2-3 degrees Celsius, the wind speed reached 2-4 meters per second.
The night was clear, the sky was cloudless. I watched the ball for 10-15 seconds, after that it disappeared.
Since I could not leave my post, I called my boss, Ensign A.T. Sushilov.
Alexander Tikhonovich Sushilov writes:
After the report of sentry Zhukov about the ball I saw, according to the terms of service, I could not immediately arrive at the protected facility. When I arrived at the protected object and surveyed the area, in the direction where the fireball was moving, about 600-700 meters from the outer fence.
On a flat layer of snow, I found a circle of melted snow with a diameter of 1 meter. The melting depth was about 1-1.5 centimeters.
Inside the prop in the center was another circle with a diameter of about 10-15 centimeters. It was yellow. The composition is similar to clay with sand. The thickness of this layer was 2-2.5 centimeters.
When I carefully removed the layer of the yellow circle, there was pure snow under it.Further exploring the area within a radius of 1 km, I did not find anything else.
