Lebedevsky Evgeny Yuryevich's message to the Commission on the observation of an unusual phenomenon in the area of art. Sknyatkino, Yaroslavl region.

I read the material in the newspaper "Trud" - "Exactly at 4.10", therefore I inform you that I observed the same phenomenon in 1980 on May 15 from 0-40 to 0-50. At that time, I worked as a locomotive driver and drove passenger trains on the Savelovo-Snokovo section. On the night of May 15, 1980, with the assistant engineer A.S. Bychkov, we were driving the passenger train No. 602 Moscow-Rybinsk. It was a normal, starry May night. I love summer night trips - you only see traffic lights and the sky is full of stars, and the location of the stars is somehow already familiar.

We set off from the Sknyatino station, followed the railway bridge over the Nerl River. I saw a bright white star in the north of the sky and a thin white ray descended from it down to the earth. It stunned me, I immediately turned off my searchlight at the locomotive. The ray began to expand in the form of a cone, the top of which is a star. Then the "cone" began to disperse in a clear grid, like at the Shukhov TV tower. Then all this, expanding to some sizes, began to lose its sharpness. This ray did not reach us - the phenomenon began to tilt towards the horizon line - to the east; the star dimmed, leaving a glow in the form of an inversion trace. Like when launching a rocket at night (I had to observe this). When I saw what was happening, I showed my assistant Byskov A.S. then, while the cone was expanding. I started calling the attendant at the Kalyazin-Post station on the radio (this is the next station after Sknyatino). Svolkova T. answered me. I asked her to look at the sky, after which she replied to me that there was some kind of glow from a star. Then I asked her to call the train dispatcher, who was at the Bologoe station - these are about 300 kilometres away from us in a straight line. Pavlova Zh. was on duty, who replied: "Some kind of glow in the east."

The sharp visibility of this phenomenon lasted from 0-40 to 0-50. We observed the glow with an inversion trail before sunrise, because our trip lasted until 5 a.m., while we were driving to the station. I asked Sonkovo about the phenomenon from the locomotive crews riding ahead of us, they also saw it. I reported this to the USSR Academy of Sciences.
