Initial data
Description of an unusual phenomenon in the sky observed on October 17, 1978 on an island in Lake Onega (the island is located at the entrance to the Kizhi skerries).
On October 17, 1978, from 18-04 to 19-00, a luminous object consisting of a light orange core and 8 sectors of the same color separated by clear dark stripes of 8 was observed in the sky above the island of Mayachny (Rechnoy) of Lake Onega in the east, approximately 30 degrees from the horizon line; moreover, the eighth was shorter than the rest. The edges of the sectors flickered and swirled along the course of the object. The object was moving from the east to the south, then stopped (or moved to the observation point). Then the object quickly disappeared in a southerly direction. At the time of moving south after the "stop", dark stripes were not observed. In terms of illumination, the object was brighter than the clouds at that moment (in this part of the sky).
On this day, i.e. October 17, Mayachny Island had poor microphone radio communication with Petrozavodsk, although radio stations in Novosibirsk and Leningrad were received at 15:00, and Italian and English voices were heard on the air at 18:00. At the time of observation, the hum of an aircraft flying on the CER was heard.
The object was observed: Pavel Danilovich Veselov (observer of the weather station), Andrey Grigoryevich Simonov (worker at Petrozavodskmash).
Hypotheses
Booster, the rocket and tracks
For UFOs often take stages of rockets, parts of space ships burning in the atmosphere, the launches of various missile technology for military purposes, etc., and traces from them. They attract attention mostly in the dark, but in the day time have a greater aura of mystery.
Formation of the track of the launch vehicle occurs in the tropopause (the layer between the troposphere and stratosphere), which sharply reduced the vertical temperature gradient. The emergence of the so-called "jellyfish" influenced by water vapor, which are subject to enhanced condensation.
