I, Ivan Savvoteevich Marenin, born in 1931, and Albert Konstantinovich Mogenov left Leningrad at the end of April 1976 to go grouse hunting in the Novgorod region of the Batetsky district (we visited there every spring for 15 years).

We came to the pine forest to our place on the night of April 28-29, 1976. The night was quiet, dark, stars were visible in the sky, snow lay in places in the forest. At about 3 o'clock in the morning, we stood in the clearing waiting for the grouse to sing. We were standing quietly, suddenly a low hiss was heard from the right side of us and, as if at the same time, the illumination began to increase. It became as bright as day.

We exchanged glances. Looking down, you can see every blade of grass, moss, knots. We look up, cones have become visible on the tops, even needles are visible. The clearing was viewed as in the afternoon about 600 m.

We didn't ask each other, it was clear that a ray was coming from somewhere in space and very powerful, there was no feeling of warmth, but it blinded the eyes to look at it. We timed it, and the duration of illumination lasted 10 minutes. We stood in the clearing for 2 minutes and began to slowly walk away to the campfire, which was 300 meters away. The fading of the illumination was not accompanied by a hiss, but faded slowly (like the light in a cinema).

At that time, we were in a less high forest and a fading ball was visible in the sky, as if it were shrinking.
