Initial data
I.M. Dolgov writes to the Commission on AI.:
It happened approximately in December 1976, at 20-50, Vologda. I was walking in the yard with my friends when I was still in school. Above the roofs of the opposite houses in the north-east direction, we noticed a glowing blue "onion", stretched horizontally from both ends. The distance, height and dimensions were difficult to determine even approximately. We observed this phenomenon for 15-20 minutes, and this "bulb" was constantly changing, it was stretched, or rather compressed, remaining constant in length. Constantly turning into a faint horizontal stripe of blue color. then it began to fade and disappeared completely.
The Northern Lights are an unprecedented rarity in our latitudes, I have observed it and I can assure you that it has nothing to do with what we have seen.
In the beginning, when the "onion" had not yet narrowed, the dark night sky was visible in the middle of it. Its symmetrical rays formed. That's probably all.
Attempts to capture this phenomenon on film were unsuccessful.
Hypotheses
Booster, the rocket and tracks
For UFOs often take stages of rockets, parts of space ships burning in the atmosphere, the launches of various missile technology for military purposes, etc., and traces from them. They attract attention mostly in the dark, but in the day time have a greater aura of mystery.
Formation of the track of the launch vehicle occurs in the tropopause (the layer between the troposphere and stratosphere), which sharply reduced the vertical temperature gradient. The emergence of the so-called "jellyfish" influenced by water vapor, which are subject to enhanced condensation.
