July 12, 1891. Residents of Theodore Street in Ottawa, Ontario, was startled by "a giant cigar, on one side of which a rotating screw was visible, and on the other — at the larger end — a bright light could be clearly seen."

A later article in the Quincy Morning Whig dated April 11, 1897 describes something similar to a modern airplane — even the navigation lights in their places:

Eyewitnesses describe a long elongated cigar-shaped body made of some sparkling metal, possibly aluminum [sic!]… Most likely, wings were located on both sides of the hull, pointing to the side and upwards, and above the hull one could see the vague outlines of a peculiar superstructure… There was a bow light in front of this thing... somewhere in the middle of the hull there were small lights, green on the starboard side and red at the base on the left side.

Hundreds of similar messages followed from all over the United States, sometimes describing contacts with the pilots of these ships — most often they were portrayed as inventors or military.
