In the town of Aubrey, Missouri, a woman detective B. J. morrow tells Lt. Brian Tillman, with whom she is having an affair, about her pregnancy. He asks her to meet him that evening at the Motel. Approaching the Motel, B. J. experiences a vision that leads her to the field where the woman digs up human remains.

Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully travel to Aubrey to investigate this case. Morrow discovered the remains belong to FBI agent Sam Chaney, investigating with partner Sam Ledbetter three murders in Aubrey in 1942. Both agents subsequently disappeared. The agents find in the story of BJ inconsistencies, but Tillman defends her version.
