The Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Robert Louis Stevenson

Book (fiction)|1886

The strange and mysterious story of the mysterious Henry Jekyll inspires an unaccountable horror with its inexplicability. How can a decent, well-respected man, with an even, calm character, be connected with this vicious man, Edward Hyde, who commits brutal acts? Why are there such strange conditions in the doctor's will? Where does this Hyde live and where does it constantly disappear without a trace? The tangled incidents in which these two faces are fatally intertwined end tragically… And only the diary of the deceased, replete with terrible details, clarifies the picture of what happened.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Movie|1932

Dr. Henry Jekyll believes that there are two distinct sides to men - a good and an evil side. He believes that by separating the two, man can become liberated. He succeeds in his experiments with chemicals to accomplish this and transforms into Hyde to commit horrendous crimes. When he discontinues use of the drug, it is already too late.

The brilliant scientist Dr. Jekyll is a happy man who is going to marry the beautiful Beatrice Emery, the daughter of Sir Charles Emery. At the same time, the doctor is engaged in chemical experiments, wanting to create a substance that can change a person's soul for the better. Jekyll takes a self-mixed elixir and turns into Mr. Hyde – an extremely evil, violent and aggressive personality. Amazed at the result, he repeats the experiment and, once again becoming Mr. Hyde, goes to the music hall. There, he spots Ivy Pearson at the bar – the girl Jekyll and his friend Dr. John Lanion recently rescued from a bully.

Mr. Hyde's evil nature manifests itself: he arranges a fight in the music hall and persuades the owner to fire Ivy, who then takes away with him. Hyde becomes her tyrant and tormentor. The unfortunate girl goes to Dr. Jekyll in despair, and he promises her that Mr. Hyde will not harm her again. But the doctor can no longer control the dark side, and that same night, turning into Hyde, comes back to Ivy. The girl, unable to stand the bullying any longer, makes a fuss and tries to escape. Hyde kills Ivy, then flees to his home, but can't get into the locked lab from the inside.

After writing a note to John Lanion, Hyde uses it to infiltrate the lab, where he takes the elixir and becomes Jekyll. The doctor confesses to his friend that he can no longer control Hyde's personality. Jekyll goes to his fiancee Beatrice and tells her that they can't be together. The girl becomes desperate, and Jekyll, who has already left, turns into Hyde and attacks her. At Beatrice's screams, Sir Charles rushes into the room and begins to fight Hyde, but Hyde kills him by hitting him several times on the head with a cane, and runs away. The police track Hyde to the house, but only find Jekyll there. However, John Lanion, who knows about the transformations, claims that it was Jekyll who committed the crime.

Jekyll says: "I'm Dr. Jekyll… I didn't do anything… I'm Dr. Jekyll… I'm Dr. Jekyll… I didn't do anything… I'm Dr. Jekyll… I'm Dr. Jekyll... " But then he turns into Mr. Hyde, starts a fight with the police, and steps on John Lanion with a knife. He shoots him with a revolver. Hyde falls, and as he dies, he turns into Dr. Jekyll.

Phenomena in artwork: Werewolf

Dr. Jekyll invents an elixir that allows the dark side of man to gain the upper hand. After taking the drug, Jekyll changes his appearance (thick eyebrows and hair grow back, his eyes become mad, an animal grin appears) and behavior (he becomes violent and unrestrained). Others do not recognize him and call him a monster or a demon. After a while, Jekyll begins to turn into Hyde involuntarily, without taking the drug.

To transform back into Jekyll, Hyde needs to take the elixir again. Each of them knows about the existence of the second personality and has access to its knowledge and memories.

After being killed in the form of Hyde, after death, he returns to the form of Jekyll.
