The Mummy's Hand

Movie|1940

A couple of young, out-of-work archaeologists in Egypt discover evidence of the burial place of the ancient Egyptian princess Ananka. After receiving funding from an eccentric magician and his beautiful daughter, they set out into the desert only to be terrorized by a sinister high priest and the living mummy Kharis who are the guardians of Ananka’s tomb.

It was this film that formed the basis for the 1959 film "The Mummy", shot at Hammer Film Productions.

At the Bunnings ' house in the small town of Mapleton, an aged Steve Bunning tells Isabel, the fiancee of his son John Bunning, and her mother about the events that occurred in the previous film The Mummy's Hand. At the same time, the aged but alive Andoheb tells this story to his successor as the high priest of Karnak – Mehmet Bey, after which he informs about the upcoming trip to America with Haris to kill all those involved in the desecration of the tomb of Princess Ananka.

Mehmet Bey, upon arrival in Mapleton, takes the position of caretaker of the local cemetery and sends the mummy to be killed on the first night. Haris enters the Bunnings ' house unnoticed and kills Steve Bunning. The next night, he kills Steve Bunning's sister in the same way. A witness of these events-gardener Jim-after an unsuccessful attempt to shoot Haris with a shotgun, is paralyzed and falls into insanity.

A colleague of Bunning Sr., Babe Hanson, arrives in Mapleton, immediately realizing that the murders are the work of a mummy, but neither Bunning Jr. nor the police believe him. In the evening, on a deserted street, Haris kills Babe. John Bunning finds a piece of evidence – a piece of mummy bandage. A police expert convinces the sheriff that the murders are the work of a living dead man. Mehmet Bey realizes that despite Andoheb's instructions, he could not avoid temptation and fell in love with Isabel. He orders Haris to kidnap the girl and bring her to the cemetery.

While the sheriff is telling the truth to the residents of the city, a maid comes running with the news that Haris has kidnapped Isabel. One of the townspeople recalls that the new caretaker of the cemetery spoke about Egyptian customs and sacred books. A crowd of citizens with torches goes to the cemetery, where Mehmet Bey is preparing to make Isabel and himself immortal with a tincture of tana leaves.

Hearing the approaching crowd, Mehmet Bey orders Haris to take the girl away and hide her, and he goes out to the people with a revolver in his pocket. He pretends that he does not understand what John Banning is asking him, but one of the townspeople notices Haris hiding with a girl. Then the priest snatches a revolver from his pocket, but does not have time to shoot John – the sheriff kills him himself. The crowd overtakes the mummy at the Bunnings ' house and surrounds the house. John goes inside, but can't handle Haris. Haris goes out on the balcony, and the crowd throws torches at him, setting the house on fire. On the second attempt, John beats off Isabel and descends from the balcony by an external staircase. Haris, weakened and hit by several shots, burns down in the fire that engulfed the house.

The Mummy has not changed much compared to the original film. The only difference is the burns left after an unsuccessful attempt to burn the monster. The history and behavior of the mummy have not changed.

The priests of the Egyptian god Ra use the leaves of the long-extinct plant Tana to maintain life in the body of a person convicted of sacrilege. Three thousand years ago, they buried him in a sarcophagus wrapped in bandages, like a mummy.

Every full moon, the high priest of Ra should pour a decoction of three leaves of Tana into his mouth – this will make the mummy's heart beat for the next month. In order for the mummy to be able to move and attack people, a decoction of nine leaves is required. The mummy understands the priest's speech and orders, but does not utter a word herself.

After the attack of the mummy, a gray trace consisting of mold remains on the bodies of the victims. The same mold is found on a piece of bandage that is wrapped around the mummy's body.

The mummy moves slowly, as if half of its body is paralyzed. However, this does not prevent her from catching up with her victims and getting ahead of her pursuers. The monster has great power: he is able to strangle a person with one hand and climb a steep wall with a woman in his arms.

Pistol shots do not cause serious damage to the mummy. It is possible to kill him only with the help of fire.
