China has launched the Tokamak HL-2 thermonuclear reactor for the first time at the Chengdu plant. The British Independent writes about this.
The reactor uses a powerful magnetic field to melt hot plasma at a temperature of 150 million degrees Celsius, which is 10 times higher than the temperature of the Sun's core.
It is called the "artificial sun" because of its ability to infinitely produce large amounts of clean energy.
The construction of the reactor was completed in 2019.
In January 2022, the launch experiment was conducted again. He worked for 17 minutes (1056 seconds) at a temperature of 70 million degrees Celsius. During the tests, the plasma in the installation warmed up five times stronger than the Sun.
The ultimate goal of the project is to create almost limitless clean energy that mimics the natural reactions occurring inside stars. Such a reactor does not require fossil fuels and does not leave hazardous waste.
The EAST experiment is part of the project to create an International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), which involves China, India, the EU, Russia, the USA and other countries.
