The bizarre shape was photographed in the middle of the northern Lights in Iceland and Norway on March 5, although it is believed that the vortex originated in the United States.
Photographer Bettina Begtoft, who photographed this picture in Norway, said spaceweather.com:
"I noticed him at 2.02 a.m. local time. It looked white to the naked eye, but my Nikon D750 camera showed a beautiful blue color."
Shan Yang captured it in Iceland. He said:
"I caught it in Akureyri around 1 a.m. local time on March 5th. It looked otherworldly against the background of the northern lights."
Experts believe that the whirlpool was actually caused by one of Musk's SpaceX rockets when it released unnecessary fuel.
SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on March 4. The mission was known as Trasnporter-10 and involved putting 53 small satellites into orbit.
The ejected second stage of the rocket descended from orbit as it flew over the Barents Sea, allowing it to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. This, in turn, caused it to spin, creating a swirling pattern.
