The safari tour operator and his guests witnessed the game of a pink albino elephant with its relatives in a South African reservoir. This incredibly rare genetic phenomenon occurs only once in every 10,000 births.
It is believed that the probability of the birth of such a baby elephant is 1 in 10,000
According to the publication Live Science, tour operator Theo Potgieter took photos and videotaped a meeting with a pink albino elephant on February 9, 2024 in Kruger National Park in South Africa. According to experts, the age of the unusual animal is about one year.
As Potgieter said, cases of albinism in elephants occur about 1 in 10,000 births.
Albinism is a rare genetic disease characterized by the absence of pigment (melanin) in the hair, skin and eyes of an animal.
Unfortunately, this can hardly be called luck or a gift. Albinism in the wild significantly shortens the life span of an animal. This is due not only to the inability to disguise, but also to some potential health problems, such as poor hearing, impaired vision, and reduced immunity.
In addition, albinos are often hunted by poachers who want to find the most exotic animal for sale.
Elephants, like other animals, may reject an albino relative because of its unusual color. However, judging by the footage, the family treats the pink elephant well.
The cub plays with other baby elephants and enjoys the refreshing waters of the Oliphants River.
