Huge "diamonds" shone on the banks of the Yenisei

In the State Natural Biosphere Reserve "Sayano-Shushensky" they shared interesting facts about the nearby hydroelectric power station of the same name, illustrating them with spectacular photos.

This time, the press service bypassed flora and fauna, and chose the Yenisei hummocks - blocks of ice covering the reservoir coast in spring as the main topic for the story. Recall that the reservoir was created when the famous power plant was built on the river.

Employees of the institution say that the ice sometimes takes bizarre shapes, and sometimes resembles giant diamond placers.

The abundance of hummocks is caused by a feature of the hydraulic structure. When regulating the reservoir level, the water can rise and fall in different seasons by 40 m. This leads to the appearance of a flood lane. In the spring it is visible, and in the summer it is covered with water. In winter, the water level decreases, and the ice, having lost its support, begins to break off and rolls down in chunks. So it turns out the beauty captured in the pictures.

With the establishment of heat, the banks will grow grass and attract wild animals to the Yenisei.
