The three-stage suborbital sounding rocket was launched on the afternoon of March 3, 2021, commissioned by the Department of Defense from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.
The launch was supposed to study ionization in space beyond the Earth's atmosphere.
After flying to an altitude of several hundred miles and about 500 miles offshore, the rocket's payload released a small amount of steam into the near-vacuum of space. Vapour emissions do not pose a risk to public health or the Earth's environment.
