The inhabitants of the "human settlements" now have something to really compare their urban existence with and draw final conclusions (for each their own). A scientific expedition exploring the Filchner ice shelf in the southern part of the Weddell Sea came across the largest breeding area of ice fish on the planet, Iona. The camera recorded thousands of fish "nests".
According to scientists, at that moment about 60 million individuals were on the seabed at the same time.
The surveillance system on the ship covered a nest area of 45.6 thousand square meters, and the number of "nests" in this space was more than 16 thousand.
One such recess (15 cm deep, 75 cm in diameter) is capable of accommodating 1.5-2.5 thousand eggs.
Some of the holes were empty, and dead fish were seen in others.
As the main reason for this phenomenon, warm currents passing nearby are called. That's why this place is favored by seals who actively hunt fish.
