Some researchers believe that sprites are linked to cosmic rays: subatomic particles from distant outer space bombard the surface of the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in release secondary electrons, which, in turn, are factors of outbreaks. They stimulate the appearance of sprites. If this theory is correct, the sprites can increasingly appear over the years, because cosmic rays are enhanced by the decline of the solar cycle.

Despite the fact that the sprites as a phenomenon was discovered already a century ago, many scientists until recently did not believe in their existence. And only in 1989 when sprites were photographed on camera from the space Shuttle, they have become science fact.
