Have you ever seen the sprites? Some believe that it is impossible. Vertical red lightning appear above thunderstorms and usually disappear so quickly, and before you can blink. However, Michael Gavan was able to catch them on may 23 in the North-West of the U.S. state of Kansas.
"Extremely bright "jellyfish" was perfectly visible to the naked eye in the twilight. The clear sky opened up fantastic views of the mesoscale convective system passing through Nebraska at the distance of 160 km," — said the photographer.
The storm lasted so long that Michael managed to attach the 85-mm lens to his camera to take some pictures of sprites closeup.
During solar minimum, cosmic rays from outer space penetrated the inner solar system relatively unimpeded. Some models show that this creates in the Earth's atmosphere favorable conditions for the formation of sprites. If so, then now is the time to look for the "jellyfish" in the sky.
