The Chinese Yutu-2 mission made an unusual discovery: 2 small spheres made of translucent glass were found in the dust on the far side of the moon. These balls can store information about the history of our satellite, including the composition of the mantle and asteroid impacts, Science Alert reports.
Glass on the moon is formed when silicate material is exposed to high temperature. In the history of the Moon's development, there was a violent volcanism that led to volcanic glass emissions. Meteorite impacts also cause intense heat, which leads to the formation of glass.
The found balls reach from 15 to 25 mm in diameter. The spheres were discovered near fresh impact craters.
The objects may be the lunar equivalent of terrestrial tektites — glass objects similar to pebbles that are formed when the earth's material melts under high temperature conditions, flies up, hardens and acquires a streamlined shape when it falls back to earth.
Scientists believe that there should be a lot of such globules on the lunar highlands, they are going to send a sampling mission there to study the early history of collisions of cosmic bodies with the Moon.
