During strong storms in the US state of Texas on Thursday, April 8, there was a strong hail. In the city of College Station, hailstones reached the size of baseballs, reports say ABC 13.
The storms covered the entire Brazos Valley, and eyewitnesses managed to film "apocalyptic" storm clouds hanging over the area in several tiers.
The hail damaged homes and cars, leaving dents and shattering windows. Some of the hailstones had protruding sharp edges, like spikes.
As the storm system moved eastward, warnings for severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes were issued across the region.
According to the information National Geographic, large hail is formed by layers of water that freeze in a large cloud. A frozen drop begins to fall out of the cloud during a storm, but is lifted back up by a strong upward wind. When the hail rises, water drops fall on it, which freeze, adding new layers to it. The stronger the updraft, the larger the hail eventually falls to the ground.
