An unusual phenomenon in the sky was captured by the Subaru telescope on April 17. The spiral was spotted near Mauna Kea— a volcano on the island of Hawaii. In the frame you can see it in the left part.
According to Live Science, the spiral arose due to the fuel discharge after the descent from orbit of the upper stage of the Falcon 9 reusable launch vehicle. SpaceX launched it with the NROL-85 satellite of the US National Directorate of Military Space Intelligence from Vandenberg Base in California on April 17.
The Subaru Telescope is an 8.2—meter optical-infrared telescope located in Hawaii and operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. The facility operates at an altitude of 4,139 meters. Due to the difficulties of being in a rarefied atmosphere, most of the Subaru staff work remotely, and only a few people remain on site to operate the telescope.
