Virgin Orbit's LauncherOne first entered orbit on January 17, 2021, after being dropped at 19: 39 UTC from a Virgin Orbit Cosmic Girl 747 carrier aircraft off the coast of California.
Ten cubic NASA satellites put an innovative 25,855-ton rocket into orbit during the Launch Demo 2 mission. The success came about eight months after the first LauncherOne failed shortly after its LOX / Kerosene NewtonThree engine caught fire.
Virgin Orbit used a modified Boeing 747 launch vehicle to send its LauncherOne rocket into orbit to deploy ten payloads for NASA's Launch Services Program (LSP). According to Virgin Orbit, " in addition to increasing the payload of the rocket, this method allows the LauncherOne system to be the world's most flexible and fastest launch service-flying in a short time and from a wide variety of locations to access any orbit."
