Older employee surveillance George Cairns arrives at night in the woods near the town of Dudley, Arkansas, with a young-looking mistress named Paul gray. A woman has to first to catch it and runs away into the forest. Cairns runs after her, but soon loses sight of it. Stumbling, he rises and sees a lot of lights in the bushes and then a tall figure in a mask cuts off his head with a battle axe.
Mulder and Scully arrive in Dudley, as a missing Kearns was a Federal employee and a witness, passing on the ring road past Dudley, seen in the field of unexplained lights. On the place where supposedly was the lights, Mulder and Scully discover a large fire in the field, but the local Sheriff Arens argues that it is the result of illegal burning of garbage. Having visited Cairns wife Doris, who said her husband likely ran off with his young mistress, the agents go to the local poultry farm "of Cako" that Cairns was going to close due to numerous violations of sanitary norms. The factory Manager Jess Harold believes that the observations of Cairns were not substantiated, and the inspector just wanted to hurt the factory out of personal animosity. Managing agents shows "pride of the factory" – a great grinder, which grind production waste going to feed the chickens. Paul gray, who works on the Assembly line, suddenly attacks Harold with a knife, but the Sheriff Arens kills her service weapon. Attending physician, factory doctor Vance Randolph tells the agents that the Floor lately complained of severe headaches, and Cairns before.
Walter Chaco, the grandfather, the Floors gray, and her guardian, gives agents permission for her autopsy. Mulder discovers that the Field grey was 47 years old, although she looked much younger. The autopsy shows that gray was suffering from the syndrome Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare fatal disease. Being on the road, the agents nearly collide with a truck factory, whose driver, as it turns out, has also suffered from this syndrome. The truck falls into the river where wastes are dumped from the poultry farm. Puzzled blood-red river, Mulder asks the Sheriff to scour the bottom, and he reluctantly agrees. In the river found the bones of at least nine people, including Kearns. All skeletons missing the skull and bones on the ends look as if subjected to grinding or boiling. Meanwhile, Randolph and Harold discuss the concern that the number of cases of the syndrome Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has increased greatly in recent times.
Using the database of the FBI, Mulder finds out that over the last fifty years within a radius of two hundred miles from Dudley disappeared 87. Mulder suspects that among residents is widespread cannibalism, which could theoretically explain why Paul grey looked so young despite his age. Mulder also finds that once Cairns suffered from the syndrome Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and other inhabitants of the city could be infected by eating his body. Agents decide to check the city registry of acts of civil status to find out what age the residents of Dudley, but it turns out that in the repository recently occurred a strong fire.
Came to the house of CACO Doris Kearns close to hysteria, as it helped to cover up the circumstances of the murder of her husband and fears exposure. CACO in the presence of Harold calms her, but Doris in fear that CACO kills her, goes home and calls Mulder. He sends Scully to Doris, but a masked man with a hatchet attacked Mrs. Kearns at her house.
Arriving at the mansion, Chaco, Mulder discovers his house, but finds a locked Cabinet. Cracking the wardrobe, Mulder finds a severed and shrunken heads of several people, including George Cairns. Chaco stuns Scully in the house Doris Kearns and driven to a field where already lit a large bonfire, around which a crowd of local residents. Food from the big pot he gives Dr. Randolph, and commands all Harold. Chaco scolds Harold for what he killed "one of us" and allowed the epidemic of the deadly disease. In response to Harold's orders to kill the old man, and a man in a mask cuts off the head. Scully laid on the guillotine after Chaco, but came to the rescue Mulder kills the executioner who turns out to be Sheriff Arens. At the outbreak of the turmoil of Harold trying to kill Mulder, knocks down and tramples the receding crowd.
In narration, Scully says that poultry farm Chaco was closed by the US Department of agriculture, and from disease Creutzfeldt-Jakob died 27 residents. Chaco, who at the time of death was 93, was a pilot during world war II and was shot down over New Guinea, after which he spent some time among the cannibals tribe "Jala". Scully also says that the body of Chaco was never found, and the final scene makes it clear that it was milled in the factory meat grinder and fed to the chickens.
