A new species of scarlet jellyfish has been discovered in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean

Experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have found a previously unknown jellyfish drifting in the Atlantic at a depth of about 700 m. Unusual scarlet-colored creatures may turn out to be a species unknown to science, reports Live Science.

The found jellyfish looks like a beret with filamentous appendages, the creature belongs to the genus Poralia. At the moment, only one species of Poralia has been described: Poralia rufescens with a bell-like body and thirty tentacles.

The NOAA team noticed a jellyfish off the coast of Newport, the US state of Rhode Island. The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) plunged to a depth of more than 900 m. Scientists have also captured several undescribed families and potential new species.

This deep dive was part of the NOAA North Atlantic Stepping Stones expedition, which the team conducted from June 30 to July 29. During the mission, 25 dives were made at depths from 250 to 4 thousand meters to explore the life of deep-sea creatures.
