An incredible event happened in the center of New Jersey - a meteorite fell on a house. The object measuring 10 by 15 centimeters and weighing 1.8 kilograms punched a hole in the roof of the house, crashed into the wooden floor and left behind a black stone the size of a potato. The family that owns the house found it still warm. By a lucky chance, no one was injured, and the house was not seriously damaged.
As noted by Suzy Cop, the owner of the house, they first thought that someone had thrown a stone into the bedroom upstairs, but soon realized that this was not the case. Their house became a target for an object falling from the sky.
Scientists note that the fall of meteorites to Earth is a common phenomenon. About 500 meteorites fall on Earth every year, but only a few of them reach the Earth's surface. Most meteorites burn up in the atmosphere before reaching the earth's crust. However, a meteorite falling on a house is a rarity.
According to astrophysicist John Sullivan:
"A meteorite falling on a house is a very rare phenomenon. If you live in a house that was hit by a meteorite, then you can consider yourself one of the luckiest people on Earth."
Meteorites are small pieces of cosmic bodies that may contain information about the origin of our Solar System. Studying meteorites helps scientists better understand how planets and other space objects were formed.
The family that owns the house plans to meet with an astrophysicist to further study the meteorite. Perhaps this object will become a source of new scientific discoveries. However, for the family, it was a reminder that we live in a vast universe where anything can happen at any moment.
