Wednesday, November 7, 1973, children living in the village of Le-Fife (located near the town of Fourmies in the North of France), claimed to have seen an unidentified flying object in the sky. At that time Jean-Louis Chappat, who was then 18 years old, investigated this case.
That day the weather was good. For this reason, several children quietly played in front of the tower of Jeanne III furmi. Around 19:30 they saw in the sky a mysterious ball of light, flying above the height of Rue de Fiefdom near the farm Bodysuits.

Le jeune enquêteur mettra 12 longs jours pour rencontrer les témoins :
« Je les ai vus et tous ont, séparément, raconté la même chose. Ils étaient pétrifiés quand ils revivaient la scène. J’ai tout consigné dans un rapport pour la revue Lumières dans la nuit (NDLR : lire ci-dessous). Après, les parents s’en sont mêlés et tout a été stoppé. Dans les années 70, c’était mal perçu de dire avoir vu un objet volant non identifié (OVNI). On se moquait. Alors les gens se taisaient ».
Il poursuit :
« Je suis allé, sur place, dans la pâture de la ferme Tricot et il y avait bien, sur le sol, des traces, des rectangles écrasés visiblement par quelque chose d’assez lourd ».
Aucune enquête officielle ne fut menée à l’époque :
« C’est normal. Il y a 40 ans, les mœurs étaient différentes. Quand on déclarait avoir vu un objet volant non identifié (OVNI), on était très souvent moqué. Donc, les gens se taisaient. Aujourd’hui, c’est différent, chaque apparition est prise très au sérieux. Il suffit de se rendre, selon l’endroit où vous habitez, soit à la police soit à la gendarmerie où l’on vous écoutera avec attention »
Le rapport des enquêteurs à l’époque
Voici le rapport rédigé par Jean-Louis Chappat et Jean-Marie Bigorne, dans la revue Lumières dans la nuit, en 1974 : « Dix enfants jouent au ballon, au niveau de la tour Jeanne III à Fourmies quand ils observent une lumière rouge qui descend du ciel en direction du lieudit Le Fief. La curiosité aidant, la petite troupe prend le Chemin vert et se dirige vers la lumière qui se trouve de l’autre côté de la route Fourmies-Wignehies, dans une prairie entre une maison en construction et la ferme Tricot. Il s’agit d’un disque avec coupole reposant sur trois pieds de 5 à 6 m de diamètre et 2 à 2,50 m de haut. Au sommet du dôme clignote une intense lumière rouge. Le disque émet une lumière blanc métallique. Une luminosité jaune orange semble sortir par deux hublots et pique les yeux des enfants. Plusieurs s’en vont, quatre restent, se cachant derrière un remblai de terre, à moins de 35 m de l’objet. L’un des enfants regarde sa montre, elle est arrêtée.
Un des enfants veut s’approcher, mais doit rebrousser chemin, les yeux en larme. L’objet s’élève alors lentement à 4 ou 5 m du sol, décrit un léger mouvement hélicoïdal et part vers le ciel à vive allure, pour devenir un point lumineux rouge vif. Au cours de l’observation, les enfants entendirent un bruit décrit comme un tut-tut.
Ce bruit sera remplacé au cours du décollage par un bruit de sirène assourdissant ».
