Initial data
The loys monkey, or Ameranthropoides loysi (unofficially), was a strange creature similar to a monkey shot by Swiss geologist Francois de Lois in 1917 on the border between Venezuela and Colombia. The creature resembled a hominid, it did not have a tail like a monkey, had 32 teeth and a height of 1.60 to 1.65 meters.
Francois de Lois was leading an oil exploration expedition near the Tarra and Maracaibo Rivers when two creatures approached their group. Francois de Lois shot at the creatures, trying to defend himself. The male escaped into the jungle, and the female was killed. The creature was photographed.
When Francois de Lois returned to Switzerland, he did not tell anyone about this creature. However, in 1929, anthropologist George Montadon discovered the photograph while looking for information in Loyce's notes on the indigenous tribes of South America, and persuaded Loyce to publish it in an English newspaper.
Later, several articles about the mysterious creature were published in France, and Georges Montadon proposed its scientific name to the French Academy of Sciences.
However, scientific recognition of this species as Ameranthropoides loysi - the American humanoid monkey de Lois - was met with rejection.
Hypotheses
Deliberate falsification
This version includes any falsifications that imitate unexplained phenomena both from the outside: practical jokes, flash mobs, fake news, witness fraud, staging, etc.
There are many ways to make something similar to a ghost or a flying saucer from improvised materials, without using video and photomontage.
Many homemade things made for the sake of a joke, a practical joke or a direct imitation of a mystical being or event can be taken as unexplained not only in photos and videos, but also in reality.
Investigation
It seems that the article is not correct - Maracaibo is not a river, but a lake.
