On August 20, 1962, a tearful boy ran to the police in the Brazilian town of Duas Pontes. 12-year-old Raimundo Mafra da Silva said his father was killed or stolen by “evil spirits.”

On the evening of August 19, he, his younger brothers and father Rivalino Mafra Da Silva, a poor prospector, woke up hearing voices at the hut. One of the voices seemed to say: “This one looks like Rivalino, he should be killed.” Terrified, they stayed in their beds and spent the rest of the night in prayer. The next morning, Raimundo came out of the hut and saw two UFOs in the shape of a ball:

"I plucked up the courage to go out and saw two large balls floating in the air at a height of a meter and centimeters 30 from each other. One is all black, with a protrusion like a curved antenna, and a small tail, the other is black and white, the outlines are the same. They made a humming sound and seemed to emit flames through holes that flickered like a firefly.

I called my father. He went to the balls and stopped at a distance of two meters. At that moment, the balls merged together. Now there was only one ball, a larger one; it was kicking up dust from the ground, throwing out yellow smoke that darkened the sky. Making strange noises, the ball slowly floated towards his father. I saw yellow smoke envelop him and he disappeared. I ran after him into a pungent-smelling yellow cloud, but saw nothing but yellow haze. I called my father, but he didn't answer. There was complete silence around.

Then the yellow smoke dissipated. The balls disappeared. My father has disappeared. I want him to come back."

The incident was investigated by Lieutenant Wilson Lisboa of Diamantina. He found drops of blood near Rivalino's house and suspected that Raimundo had invented everything to hide the murder of his father, but the police did not reveal any signs of a lie. Psychiatrist Joao Antunes, having studied the boy, told reporters:

"I don't want to discuss this case anymore, as the facts are beyond my competence. But I can say that the boy is normal and says what he thinks is true."

During the investigation, Priest Jose Avila Garcia told the lieutenant that his friend Antonio Rocha, while fishing on the Manzo River, saw two balloons near the house of Rivalino da Silva at about 4 a.m. on August 19.

This reconstruction of the disappearance or murder of Rivalino Mafra da Silva, published in Domenica del Corriere, alas, has nothing to do with the true story

___________________

Rivalino Mafra da Silva was a Brazilian diamond prospector who lived in Diamantino, a town in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais. Rivalino's wife died in 1961, and he raised his three sons Raimundo (12 years old), Fatimo (6 years old) by himself and Dirseu (2 years old) in a shack. On August 19, 1962, the family was woken up in the middle of the night by a shadow in their shared bedroom. According to Raimundo, the shadow was "half the size of a man and did not resemble a man in shape." He quietly walked across the room, looked at Mafra, and then left their house.

After the shadow left, the Mafra heard voices and footsteps outside. One of the voices said, "I think it's Rivalino," and then Rivalino jumped out of bed and went into the living room. He asked the voices who they were, but they refused to identify themselves. They told Rivalino they were going to kill him. Eventually, the voices stopped and seemed to go away, but Mafras could not sleep after this incident. They were so scared that they prayed all night.

In the morning, while bringing his father's horse, Raimundo saw two spherical objects floating in the air near the family hut. One of the objects was completely black, the other was black and white. Both objects had antennae and tail-like appendages. They also made humming sounds, and flashes of light or fire erupted from their backs.

Raimundo called his father, and when Rivalino went outside, the two objects combined into one ball and released yellow smoke. Smoke covered Rivalino and filled the air with a terrible smell. When the smoke cleared a minute later, Rivalino and the spherical object were gone. Raimundo searched everywhere for his father, but could not find him. He ran to the local police station and reported the incident. When the police searched the Mafras hut, they found drops of human blood, although it was not possible to determine whether it belonged to Rivalino.

Naturally, the authorities did not buy Raimundo's incredible story. They suspected that he had killed his father, or perhaps was covering up for the killer. Joao Antunes de Oliveira, a psychiatrist, believed that Raimundo was completely sane. He seemed to genuinely believe that he had seen a spherical object abduct his father. However, the police did not believe it.

Five days after his father's disappearance, Raimundo gave an interview to the press. The next day, an article about this story appeared in the newspaper Diario de Minas. The Tribuna da Imprensa newspaper, based in Rio de Janeiro, covered the case on August 29 in English-language media. Many other articles and books have since covered the disappearance of Rivalino Mafra da Silva, but with distortions and inaccuracies.

One common fragment of the apocrypha, missing from the earliest sources, concerns aliens. It is said that shortly before Rivalino disappeared, two of his colleagues saw a pair of three-foot-tall creatures walking past his house. The dwarves were digging a hole, and when they were noticed, they ran into the bushes. Then a red UFO appeared from the shelter and took off into the sky. Others claim that Rivalino himself saw the gnomes.

Many English sources also ignore the fact that Rivalino's body could have been found. In October 1963, A Estrela Polar reported that a group of hunters had found bones near Rivalino's house in a "hard-to-reach place." Thanks to the belt that was found with the remains, along with the location, the body was identified as the body of Rivalino. Of course, some wonder if the dice really belonged to Rivalino, but it was enough to (partially) confirm the theory of foul play. However, as far as we know, no one could name the killers. What exactly happened to the Mafra boys after their father disappeared is also unclear. It is said that Raimundo died in 2001, and the whereabouts of Fatimo and Dirseu are unknown.

Original news

Rivalino Mafra da Silva was a Brazilian diamond prospector residing in Diamantino, a town located in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais. Following the passing of his wife in 1961, Rivalino single-handedly raised his three sons: Raimundo (12 years old), Fatimo (6 years old), and Dirceu (2 years old). Their humble abode was a shack. During the night of August 19, 1962, the family was abruptly awakened by a shadow that entered their shared bedroom. According to Raimundo, the shadow appeared to be “half the size of a man and had an unconventional shape, not resembling a human being.”

_______________

Rivalino Mafra da Silva was a Brazilian diamond prospector who lived in Diamantino, a town in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais. Rivalino’s wife had died in 1961, and he raised his three sons Raimundo (12-years-old), Fatimo (6-years-old), and Dirceu (2-years-old) by himself in a shack. On August 19, 1962, the family was woken up during the middle of the night by a shadow in their shared bedroom. According to Raimundo, the shadow was “half the size of a man and not shaped like a human being.” It quietly moved through the room, looked over the Mafras, and then left their house.

After the shadow left, the Mafras heard voices and footsteps coming from outside. One of the voices said, “This seems to be Rivalino,” and then Rivalino jumped out of bed and went into the living-room. He asked the voices who they were, but they refused to identify themselves. They told Rivalino that they were going to kill him. Eventually, the voices stopped and seemed to have left, but the Mafras couldn’t sleep after this incident. They were so scared that they prayed all night.

In the morning, while fetching his dad’s horse, Raimundo saw two ball-like objects hovering in the air near the family shack. One of the objects was entirely black in color, the other was black and white. Both objects had antennae and tail-like appendages. They also made humming noises, and flashes of light or fire came out from their backs.

Raimundo shouted for his father, and when Rivalino came outside, the two objects combined into one ball and released a yellow smoke. The smoke covered Rivalino and filled the air with a terrible odor. When the smoke cleared a minute later, Rivalino and the ball-like object were gone. Raimundo looked all over for his father, but couldn’t find him. He ran to the local police station and reported what happened. When the police searched the Mafras’ shack, they found drops of human blood, although it couldn’t be determined whether it belonged to Rivalino.

Drawing by Raimundo of the objects he saw.

Naturally, the authorities didn’t buy Raimundo’s incredible story. They suspected that he killed his father, or perhaps was covering up for the murderer. Joao Antunes de Oliveira, a psychiatrist, thought that Raimundo was perfectly sane. He seemed to truly believe that he saw a ball-like object abduct his father. The police didn’t buy it though. In a cruel trick, they covered a (still living) volunteer with a sheet and told Raimundo that it was Rivalino’s dead body. Raimundo still refused to take back his account. In tears, he insisted that the story was true and that the ball must have returned his father.

While some believed the boy, other residents sided with the police. Elagmano Marques da Costa, a businessman in the area, thought Mafra ran off and abandoned his sons. One popular rumor suggested that he was murdered. Perhaps Raimundo saw the shadows and voices of the murderers, but hallucinated the rest of the incident due to shock. While he might have been deemed sane, Raimundo wasn’t in the best of health. He was badly malnourished, illiterate, and couldn’t even read a clock. Interestingly, Raimundo related the same story over and over. His account is said to have never changed, perhaps confirming the psychiatrists’ observation that he believed what he saw. (Or, if you will, the veracity of Raimundo’s testimony.)

Five days after his father’s disappearance, Raimundo gave an interview to the press. The next day, an article about the story appeared in the newspaper Diario de Minas. A Rio de Janiero-based paper, Tribuna da Imprensa, covered the case on August 29. In a September article for The A.P.R.O Bulletin entitled “Man Kidnapped by Globes,” Olavo T. Fontes translated Raimundo’s press interview, the first report of the case in English-speaking media. Many other articles and books, as listed here, have since covered Rivalino Mafra da Silva’s disappearance, but with distortions and inaccuracies.

One common piece of apocrypha, missing from the earliest sources, concerns alien dwarves.  Slightly before Rivalino’s disappearance, two of his co-workers are said to have seen a pair of three foot-tall beings while walking past his house. The dwarves were digging a hole, and when spotted, ran into the bushes. A red UFO then emerged from the hiding spot and took off into the sky. Others claim that it was Rivalino himself who saw the dwarves.

Many English sources also neglect the fact that Rivalino’s body might possibly have been found. In October 1963, A Estrela Polar reported that a group of hunters found bones near Rivalino’s house in “a place of difficult access.” Due to the belt that was found with the remains, along with the location, the body was identified as Rivalino’s. Of course, some have questioned whether the bones really were Rivalino’s, but this was enough to (partly) satisfy the foul play theory. To my knowledge, however, nobody could come up with the names of the murderers.  Whatever exactly happened to the Mafra boys after their father’s disappearance is also obscure; Raimundo is said to have died in 2001, and the whereabouts of Fatimo and Dirceu are unknown.
