Retired teacher Cheblakova O.R. writes to the newspaper's editorial office:

I am writing this letter on the advice of my son, who works as an engineer at one company. When he came home from work, he told me. I read an article in the newspaper "Trud" for January 31, 85 about the case of our plane, which was pursued by some unidentifiable glowing object. I saw an unusually curious "star" the day before, and maybe it has something to do with the case.

That's how it was.

In the evening, January 29, 1985, at about 20 o'clock, I went to close the window, which faces the southwest side. From here we have a good view of the whole city and the planes look good.

I was involuntarily attracted by the bright sight in the sky. It looked like a big bright star, radiating its light in all directions, and its rays were much longer downwards. The sky was covered with a gray haze, there were no stars anywhere, and only she hung motionless and somehow lower than ordinary stars. That's probably what attracted my curiosity to her. I began to follow her movements. She sat opposite on the sofa, spotted her distance from the frame. and from time to time I looked to see what would happen to her. For half an hour she stood still, then I was distracted for 15-20 minutes, and when I looked again, she went far to the right and below. And after a few minutes she disappeared completely.

Her visibility was no more than an hour and a half.

Please tell me what kind of star or planet it was, and which planets were visible in the western part in January 1985 on the territory of Leningrad.

The heavenly bodies

The brightest heavenly bodies in the sky are Venus, Jupiter, and sometimes Mars and, of course, the Moon.

Venus is the bright yellow of the evening or morning star, shining in the sky on the background of evening or dawn. Maximum brightness of Venus can reach up to 4.3 m, and she is the third brightness of the sun in earth's sky after the sun and the moon. It so well reflects the light of the Sun that it is relatively easy to see and day, especially if you know the location. It manifests itself in the form of tiny blinking white dots.
