Initial data
The Starovoitovs write to the editorial office of the Trud newspaper:
At your request, I want to inform you that on 8.02.85 at 19 o'clock, leaving the store, I saw a brightly burning object like a "lantern" in the sky. There was this light in the west of the firmament, the moon at that time went to the southeast, the stars were visible too, but this bright light was in one place, when I came home I told my 19-year-old son, who out of curiosity went outside.
He watched for a long time and saw how this "lantern" moved to the south and stood still again, then after a while it formed from a round into a flattened appearance (see figure) and moved away.
Hypotheses
The heavenly bodies
The brightest heavenly bodies in the sky are Venus, Jupiter, and sometimes Mars and, of course, the Moon.
Venus is the bright yellow of the evening or morning star, shining in the sky on the background of evening or dawn. Maximum brightness of Venus can reach up to 4.3 m, and she is the third brightness of the sun in earth's sky after the sun and the moon. It so well reflects the light of the Sun that it is relatively easy to see and day, especially if you know the location. It manifests itself in the form of tiny blinking white dots.
