Iozas Liepuonos, 3rd assistant captain of the t-ra "Debrecen" of the Klaipeda refrigerated Fleet, writes to you.

The natural phenomenon that I had to see on February 11, 1980 may be of interest to you, but I myself wanted to find out what kind of natural phenomenon it is, or something else...

First, I will tell you the data that may be useful in analyzing this phenomenon. The coordinates of the vessel are 18°52' s and 81°15' s.d.

Weather: South wind - 5 points (speed 8 m/sec.), sea waves - 3 points.

Cloud cover - 4 points, clouds - medium cumulus (Cumulus mediocus)

The pressure is 763 mm. The air temperature is +23°, the water temperature is 18. The depth of the ocean in that place is 3800 m. The magnetic declination is 7-8 E. The distance to the nearest port of Arica (Chile) is 600 miles. The captain's bridge is 11 m above sea level. The ship's course is 209°, the speed is 11 knots (about 20 km/h). Our ship was sailing from the port of Callao in the Republic of Peru to the fishing area (40° r.p.) with a cargo of diesel fuel. As usual, from 20-00 to 24-00, I was on watch on the bridge. The sailor Shirokikh was with me. Everything was as usual. Visibility is good - more than 10 miles.

At about 21-00 local time (5 a.m. Moscow time), to the left of the ship's course, about 40 ° above the horizon, a ray of light appeared from behind a small cloud, as if coming from one point.

After a few seconds, this ray of light began to expand and quickly became a bright sheaf of light.

It should be noted that this sheaf shone from one point only upwards. After 30-40 seconds. this sheaf of light formed a bright angle of about 40° and reached the zenith with its bright light.

A minute later, the ray of light began to fade and through the cloud I saw a light disk, which was equal in size to half the disk of the Moon. In the middle, the disc was bright white, followed by a ring of a darker color, and this ring was again bright white, although it was somewhat less bright than the center.

I had the opportunity to take a good look at this disk, as it was visible for about a minute. I watched it through a 7x50 marine binocole. Watching this disk, it seemed to me that it was approaching in our direction. It felt like that, but I can't say for sure.

A minute after the appearance, the disc of light suddenly disappeared. The cloud cover remained the same

the same as before.

After 2-3 minutes, you are still to the left of the ship's course, suddenly two very bright luminaries appeared, similar in size and light to Venus if observed with the naked eye. Not a minute has passed since they flashed in a bright white light and disappeared. They were observed about 3-5° above the horizon. There was nothing else to be seen.

All this phenomenon lasted 6-7 minutes, no sounds were heard. The RT-50 radio station was turned on in our steering room and tuned to medium waves (= 2575 khz).

The helmsman of the ship heard the whistle of the radio station at the moment when these two luminaries flashed. No one else from the crew saw this phenomenon, since at that time mostly everyone was watching a movie.

I've never seen anything like it before. I was also interested in the navigators of fishing vessels who have worked in the area for more than two years. They didn't see anything like it either.
