Amazing frozen discs have appeared on the surface of Lake Ontario in Canada, floating on the surface of the water. An eyewitness on February 7 filmed an extremely rare phenomenon, TVN Meteo reports.
Ice pancakes are plates of ice with a diameter of 30 cm to 3 meters and a thickness of up to 10 cm. Due to the collision of the disks, their shape is usually round. In the case of minor water fluctuations, they are formed from the freezing of snow or the crushing of ice glass or fresh ice, called string ice.
With strong waves, disks can also form as a result of the destruction of gray ice (snow). They can also form at a certain depth and float to the surface.
This natural phenomenon is most often observed in Scandinavia and North America, but it has also been observed in Germany and England. Ice circles were first recorded in 1895 on the American Mianus River.
