For fans of conspiracy theories about batteries in birds, the time has come to seriously strain themselves, since American engineers have designed a so-called ornithopter using stuffed birds. In total, the specialists of the Institute of Mining and Technology of the State of New Mexico made two prototypes, one of which has an artificial body, being covered with real pheasant feathers, and also the head of a stuffed cupcake is mounted on it. The second drone, in turn, was based on pigeon wings.
It is noted that both assembled devices have been successfully tested, and in the future engineers expect to expand their functionality by adding a planning mode, thanks to which they will be able to fly by analogy with aircraft-type drones. In addition, by replacing the gears in the wing drive, experts hope to reduce noise and vibration during flight, and their plans also include the use of bird epidermis with feathers, instead of sticking feathers on the plastic body.
Engineers claim that ornithopters, for the creation of which real parts of the body of birds are used, can contribute to scientists in studying the peculiarities of the aerodynamics of bird flight.
