Scientists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) photographed a strange blue creature at the bottom of the Caribbean Ocean. This is reported by the Washington Times.
The creature was found near the island of Santa Cruz at a depth of about 427 meters. Scientists believe that they could see a soft coral, a shell or a sponge, but such a species has not been described before. An animal covered with bumps has no limbs and is able to change its shape, as well as burrow into the sand. The bizarre blob was discovered during a NOAA expedition conducted to collect various data, including the geomorphology of the seabed.
Scientists are sure that the mysterious blue drop is an animal, but it will be possible to identify the group to which it belongs only when they get a sample of the animal or a better photo — perhaps an expert on corals will be able to identify it.
The Caribbean Sea, where the mysterious blue drop was discovered, has the highest level of biodiversity among all other areas of the Atlantic. According to a report by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, this biodiversity is under threat due to human actions.
