Impressive feathery arc, stretching from Nebraska to Northern Minnesota and Canada, foretold a winter storm in the Midwest and in New England.
This Cirrus arc was withdrawn on 28 November with the help of the instrument MODIS on the NASA satellite Terra. It was the result of a meteorological phenomenon known as jet streaks, which move in the high-altitude jet streams.
The jet stream is a narrow zone of strong winds in the upper troposphere, at an altitude of about 10 km. They are formed at the junction of two contrasting air masses and is characterized by zones of turbulence.
