On the desert territory of Death Valley, located on the border of Nevada and California, USA, after heavy rains, a "salty frost" appeared. The white layer of salt in the desert looks like frost or the effects of a small snowfall, AccuWeather reports.
This phenomenon is also called "salty flowers". A surface layer of white salt coating covered many hills in the Death Valley National Park. Despite the winter associations, the precipitation did not bring coolness. The daytime temperature in this area in recent weeks was +43 °C, and several days exceeded +48 °C.
Earlier this year, Death Valley made headlines in world publications when the temperature in the desert reached a record level of +56 °C.
The process of active salt release occurs when rain penetrates into the soil, dissolving salt deposits located under the surface. When the moisture evaporates, the dissolved salts are pulled out of the soil due to the capillary action, creating a fresh salty crust. Over time, the coating disappears, but after rain, parts of the desert turn white again.
