On Monday, the defense Agency research projects announced that during the week it will test a tracking system for unmanned aerial vehicles in San Diego and National city.
Trial period beginning on Monday and continuing until Friday, will focus on potential tracking system for UAVs for major cities, which create problems of high building. The test will involve sensors placed on two tethered balloons located at a height of about 500 feet above ground level and optical sensors and drones hanging on the tops of buildings.
"While DARPA focused on protecting American troops from attacks of UAVs in urban environments abroad, the developed system may ultimately help to protect the Metropolitan areas of the United States from potential terrorist threats with the use of drones," reads the Agency's statement.
DARPA will use about a dozen commercial unmanned aircraft to simulate the use of unauthorized drones flying in urban areas. Installed sensors designed to distinguish small drones from buildings, vehicles, and animals that may be in the background. The drones will also not record or store the data during their flight.
All drone flights during the trial period koordiniruyutsya with the Federal aviation administration to avoid conflicts with military and civilian air traffic. The drones will be piloted by FAA-certified pilots during the week.
