January 1 night was this year's first supermoon. The moon, being nearest to the Earth point of its orbit, is 8% wider and 16 % brighter than average. That means it's time for the lunar halo. One of such phenomena captured Eliot Herman in Arizona, USA.
"Light cloud slightly spoiled the picture, but overall I managed to catch the starry sky and lunar halo," says Herman. Rounded glow in the photo was caused by the refraction of ice crystals in the frosty air above the city of Tucson.
The full moon is called a supermoon, when the moon is in perigee. Supermoon especially often give rise to different halos in the form of luminous columns, luminous ring about the moon.
