A fantastic sight opened from the volcanic peak of Mauna Kea in the Hawaiian Islands at night on December 6. On the one hand, the fiery lava of the neighboring volcano Mauna Loa blazed at the horizon, and on the other, the almost full Moon shone, surrounded by an icy halo, inside which Mars was hiding.
"Just look at the view!" said photographer Mike Mesel.
Hawaiian volcano Mauna Loa woke up on November 27, almost 40 years after its last eruption. According to the US Geological Survey, there is currently no threat to island communities or infrastructure. Although lava flows are still coming out of the active crack, they will be concentrated around it.
For many locals, the eruption of the Hawaiian volcano has a sacred meaning. The island peaks are considered sacred here, especially Mauna Kea - the highest of the group. Not all Hawaiians are allowed to visit it, but only the most revered leaders.
