For more than a century, residents of North Carolina are intimidated by strange sounds that have been called "Seneca Guns". From time to time, explosions occur, sometimes shaking even houses. As part of the next study, experts studied the seismic situation in the region.

the findings were presented at a meeting of the american geophysical union. For the first time, local residents heard explosions in the northern part of New York state, near Seneca Lake. from the bottom came ominous sounds, the first mention of which dates back to 1850. James Fenimore Cooper wrote about them in the story "The Lake Gun".

according to various sources, the sound is similar to the explosion of heavy artillery. It is impossible to explain: it is hard to believe that nature can produce something like this. Scientists also just throw up their hands.

Locals believe that the noise is generated by distant storms, earthquakes or explosions in the quarry. Perhaps there are military exercises taking place somewhere.

Experts analyzed records of seismic sensors. Earthquakes do not occur in the region, so the sounds are most likely created by atmospheric phenomena. One of the options is fireballs, that is, bright meteors that literally explode in the atmosphere. Maybe the sounds are generated by the fall of huge ocean waves. Noise is still a mystery of the region.

Now the researchers intend to place sensors near the lake and try to collect as much data as possible over several years to more accurately answer their question.
